Takedowns and Falls is a documentary film that showcases the sport of high school wrestling via the quest for the state title. It chronicles the 2006-2007 season of the Central Dauphin High School (CDHS) in Harrisburg, Pa. by highlighting the sacrifice of its athletes, the commitment of their families and the dedication of its coaches; all without the possibility of becoming rich and famous.
Theme
High school wrestling is a team sport composed of individuals. Both individual champions and team championships are crowned at the conclusion of each season. So the athletes are competing for individual awards and also for their team’s achievements. Internal pressure from what an athlete puts on himself will pale in comparison to the pressure the team puts on the athlete when the team’s achievements are on the line.
The film examines the efforts of individuals to achieve a team victory and how individual dedication to achieve a group goal plays out as the athletes grow up. It also details the positive and negative effects of the physical and psychological strain that this intense training and the pressure to win puts on athletes and coaches.
Adding to the normal physical preparedness it takes to be a winning athlete are the weight classes. Participants must be within their allotted weight range before every match. These young athletes must be acutely aware of what, how and when they eat. Despite its intense following by fans, wrestlers are isolated from the world of popular sports. Largely owing to the fact that there is no professional league, wrestling is often the black sheep of high school sports programs, but the athletes, coaches and community are absolutely dedicated to the success of the sport and its athletes.
Takedowns and Falls explores building foundations of humility, family, friendship, individualism and teamwork, via the quest for State Championships.
